MAJUREY’S MOVES

Joining The Dots On Paul Francis Majurey

In areas throughout the eastern North Island Maori are scratching their heads as to how this one group has been able to run roughshod over iwi after iwi in conjunction with Crown support. Adding to the intrigue is the fact that the Crown and Hauraki continue to engage in secret signings of agreements, while documents made available to other tribes are redacted and/or have gone “missing” or simply not released.

– Dr Hauata Palmer, Ngai Te Rangi Kaumatua

“Also in areas at our southern boundary the Minister has decided to allow Hauraki-based iwi to have land and a voice on various central and local government organisations that makes no sense in terms of their history and location.  I believe Paul Majurey has pushed the Crown and found no resistance so he is taking whatever he can get before people wake up.”

– Haydn Edmonds (Ngātiwai Trust Board Chairman)

As a treaty and environmental lawyer, property developer and key influencer, Paul Francis Majurey of Ngāti Maru Hauraki is a very busy man with fingers in many iwi, commercial and political pies.

Take a look here to see his complex web of interests.

In under two decades he has steadily and strategically secured far more power, influence and commercial gain than arguably anyone else from Mai Matakana ki Matakana (Matakana in the north to Matakana, Tauranga in the south). As you will see, he has been busy controlling – and attempting to control – political influence and assets throughout those regions.

While there is nothing wrong it itself with doing well, the issue lies in how he is manipulating Māori and Pākeha alike for the benefit of himself and his iwi Ngāti Maru.

This has been done through his expertise and powerful contacts within the Treaty settlement process, and by way of using the Marutūāhu and Pare Hauraki collectives (both of which he chairs) as a stalking horse for Ngāti Maru. What’s more, he is trampling on Māori cultural norms by refusing to use tikanga-based processes in many of his engagements with other iwi (and Pākeha as well, for that matter).

As you will see on this website, over the past decade he has actively worked to insert those collectives into various other iwis’ Treaty settlements to gain mana whenua status in those areas, thus giving them a top seat at the decision-making table. Much of this is being done off the back of Ngāti Paoa, many of whom are becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the situation.

A Treaty Settlement Disruptor

Majurey has, with varying success, led efforts for Ngāti Maru through the Marutūāhu and Hauraki Collectives to lay claim and gain mana whenua status in vast swathes of the upper North Island through a combination of direct and overlapping Treaty claims. Read more
